Eve of Midnight: Reimagine Calamity - Channeling Mechanic Rules

⚠️ Superseded by spec 024. The in-match resource-cost / channeling economy described below is retired — cards are no longer paid for with resources. Tempo is now governed by The Action Meter, the former Resource cards fold into Sortilege & Relic persistent enhancements, and the card-corner number is now an Aurorune store value. Retained for historical reference.

What is Channeling?

Channeling is how you use resource cards in Eve of Midnight. It represents drawing power from a resource to take actions, activate abilities, or resolve conditions. When a resource is channeled, it becomes unavailable until your next turn.

How Does Channeling Work?

Step-by-Step Rules:

  1. Channeling a Resource:
    • When you use a resource to pay for a card, ability, or action, flip the resource card face-down.
    • A face-down resource card is considered channeled and cannot be used again until refreshed.
  2. Refreshing Resources:
    • At the start of your turn (during the Preparation Phase), all channeled resources are flipped back face-up, making them available again.
  3. Single Use Per Turn:
    • Each resource can only be channeled once per turn, even if it provides special effects.

Strategic Uses of Channeling

  1. Playing Support Cards:
    • Spend resources by channeling them to pay the cost of Support Cards.
    • Example: “Spend 2 Basic Resources to play this Incantation Support Card.” Flip two Basic Resource cards face-down to show they are channeled.
  2. Activating Abilities:
    • Many characters and Advanced Resources require resources to activate abilities.
    • Example: “Spend 1 Basic Resource to boost your next card’s effect.” Flip one Basic Resource card face-down.
  3. Resolving Situations:
    • Channel resources to meet the conditions of Situation Cards and progress toward resolution.
    • Example: “Spend 3 Basic Resources to resolve this condition.” Flip three Basic Resource cards face-down.

Key Points to Remember

  1. Resources Refresh Automatically:
    • All channeled resources refresh at the start of your next turn.
  2. Face-Down Cards Are Locked:
    • Once a resource is channeled (flipped face-down), it cannot be used again until it refreshes.
  3. Some Cards Interact with Channeling:
    • Advanced Resources or Support Cards may grant extra effects when channeled.
    • Example: “When this card is channeled, gain 1 extra Basic Resource for this turn.”
  4. Channeling is Visible:
    • Your channeled (face-down) resources are visible to all players, so opponents can strategize around your available resources.

Simplified Explanation

“Channeling is how you use resource cards. When you spend a resource, flip its card face-down to show it’s been used. Face-down (channeled) resources refresh at the start of your next turn. Some cards can interact with channeled resources to delay or enhance their effects.”
