Rivalries Between Races in Eve of Midnight: Reimagine Calamity
As the Eternal Clockwatcher observes, the multiverse thrives not only on alliances but also on conflict. Where unity binds, rivalries fracture, driving the races to clash, compete, and evolve.
Humans vs. Querel
Core Conflict: Humanity’s fear of being replaced by its own creations.
- Details:
Humans often admire the Querel for their technological perfection, but beneath this respect lies a deep-seated unease. Querel represent humanity’s ambition and hubris, a reminder of what might happen should the balance between innovation and humility tip too far.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Voldterran, human scavengers clash with Querel guardians over Progenitor artifacts.
- Philosophical disputes arise over the nature of free will, with humans accusing Querel of being mere extensions of their creators.
Vesper vs. Nightwatchers
Core Conflict: Light and shadow, visibility and secrecy.
- Details:
Vespers thrive in the limelight, using their charisma to influence events, while Nightwatchers prefer the anonymity of darkness. This fundamental difference leads to distrust, as Vespers view Nightwatchers as manipulators from the shadows, and Nightwatchers see Vespers as dangerously arrogant.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Shingekou, Nightwatchers sabotage Vesper-led political efforts, fearing exposure.
- Azerial becomes a battleground for control over light and shadow, with each race seeking dominance.
Dhalfir vs. Araneae
Core Conflict: Territorial disputes and cultural clashes.
- Details:
Both races share a centaur-like form but diverge wildly in their cultural identities. Dhalfir, tied to forest magics and mysticism, see the Araneae’s web-building as invasive. Araneae, on the other hand, view Dhalfir as overzealous guardians of nature.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Yorwain, Dhalfir destroy Araneae webs, accusing them of disrupting the forest’s harmony.
- Araneae retaliate by luring Dhalfir into traps, deepening the cycle of animosity.
Ætheliens vs. Lazari
Core Conflict: Order versus chaos.
- Details:
Ætheliens, as embodiments of balance, view Lazari as threats to the natural order. Lazari, with their predatory and unstructured nature, see Ætheliens as meddlesome overseers who seek to control what cannot be tamed.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Mylia, Ætheliens attempt to contain Lazari infestations, leading to prolonged skirmishes.
- Lazari sabotage Ætheliens’ efforts to restore balance in Vleddica, feeding on the realm’s instability.
Freyel vs. Medusozoa
Core Conflict: Hunters versus the elusive prey.
- Details:
Freyel, with their natural drive to seek out and understand supernatural creatures, find Medusozoa both fascinating and frustrating. Medusozoa view the Freyel’s curiosity as intrusive, leading to tension and mutual distrust.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Fjelstad, Freyel track Medusozoa through frozen waters, believing them to hold secrets about the bastion’s origins.
- Medusozoa manipulate Freyel using telepathy, leading them into traps to protect their habitats.
Dirichlet vs. Vesper
Core Conflict: Pragmatism versus vanity.
- Details:
Dirichlet, forced to prioritize survival and knowledge retention, see Vespers’ pursuit of charisma and influence as frivolous. Vespers, in turn, view Dirichlet as cold and calculating, lacking the emotional depth that defines leadership.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Reve, Dirichlet and Vespers vie for control of dreamscapes, each claiming superiority in navigating the realm’s complexity.
- In Nightwatch, Dirichlet accuse Vespers of manipulating their reset points for personal gain.
Enchè vs. Lazari
Core Conflict: Diplomacy versus predation.
- Details:
Enchè, as peaceful diplomats, see Lazari as anathema to their values. Lazari, meanwhile, see Enchè as naive and weak, exploiting their trust to gain the upper hand.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Zephel, Enchè negotiators are ambushed by Lazari seeking to disrupt their alliances.
- Enchè retaliate by using their resilience to fortify communities against Lazari invasions.
Zêtò vs. Querel
Core Conflict: Loyalty versus efficiency.
- Details:
Zêtò, driven by emotional bonds and protection of their loved ones, clash with Querel’s cold, logical approach to problem-solving. This difference often leads to misunderstandings and friction.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Utletmach, Zêtò accuse Querel of prioritizing technological goals over the safety of innocents.
- Querel counter by deeming Zêtò’s emotional decisions inefficient and dangerous.
Humans vs. Dirichlet
Core Conflict: Mortality versus immortality.
- Details:
Humans envy the Dirichlet’s ability to “reset” but question the cost of losing one’s memory. Dirichlet, in turn, see humans’ fleeting lives as a hindrance to greater progress.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Yorwain, humans attempt to uncover the secrets of Dirichlet resets, leading to ethical conflicts.
- Dirichlet sabotage human efforts to access time magic, fearing it will destabilize their fragile existence.
Nightwatchers vs. Lazari
Core Conflict: Secrecy versus relentless pursuit.
- Details:
Nightwatchers rely on stealth and secrecy to survive, but Lazari’s predatory nature often exposes them. This leads to a cycle of evasion and pursuit.
- Notable Clashes:
- In Shingekou, Lazari invade Nightwatcher hideouts, forcing them to retreat deeper into the shadows.
- Nightwatchers retaliate by setting traps, using the Lazari’s instincts against them.
