Eve of Midnight: Reimagine Calamity - World Task Rules

Overview

World Tasks are thematic challenges tied to the World Card, reflecting the lore and setting of the game. They are designed to:

Core Rules for World Tasks

1. Task Mechanics

  1. Drawing Tasks:
    • Each player may draw one World Task at the start of their turn if they do not currently have an active Task.
    • A player may have only one active Task at a time unless explicitly stated otherwise by an effect.
  2. Resolving Tasks:
    • Players complete Tasks by fulfilling their specific conditions during their turn.
    • Example Conditions:
      • Spend a specific number of resources.
      • Play a certain type of card (e.g., Subterfuge or Machination).
      • Meet health, Ambition, or Morality thresholds.
  3. Task Rewards:
    • Completing a Task grants a benefit, such as resources, cards, or Ambition/Morality points.
    • Example: “Gain 2 resources and draw 1 card upon completion.”
  4. Discarding or Abandoning Tasks:
    • Players may voluntarily abandon a Task during their turn but must resolve its penalty.
    • If a Task is left incomplete for two consecutive turns, it is automatically discarded, triggering its penalty.

2. Task Penalties

3. Scalability and Focus

  1. Achievability:
    • Tasks must be completable within 1 to 2 turns under normal conditions.
    • Example: “Spend 3 resources within 1 turn to complete this Task.”
  2. Thematic Integration:
    • Tasks are deeply tied to the lore of the world and enhance its narrative.
    • Example: For Zephel (High-Tech Metropolis):
“Bypass Security: Play a Machination card to complete this Task and gain 2 resources.”
  3. Scalability:
    • Tasks scale with the number of players or game difficulty.
    • Example: “Contribute 5 resources collectively to complete this Task.”

2. Measurable Progress

3. Reasonable Effort

4. Lore-Driven

Simplified Explanation

“World Tasks are thematic challenges tied to the game’s setting. Players resolve Tasks by fulfilling specific conditions, earning rewards that enhance gameplay. Tasks are scalable, achievable within 1-2 turns, and deeply connected to the world’s lore. If abandoned, reasonable penalties are applied, ensuring balanced gameplay.”
